The Fall

On the night of 27 October 2021 the first season of the Axolotl SMP nearly ended in a single evening. People nobody knew logged in under the accounts of abi, prop and kira, wiped inventories, and used operator permissions to wreck the server. The friends call it The Fall, or more formally The Great Grief.

What happened

It started innocently. kira had just updated the server so anyone could use the Carpet bots and Ledger inspect, and prop discovered that bots could be spawned under any name. For a joke he spawned “Technoblade” and “jeb” bots and killed them within two seconds. ¹ In prop’s telling, that attention drew exploiters to the server’s address. The friends later guessed they had been found through scanners and the famous-name bots.

Within hours the intruders were in. One of them announced “i’m popbob and you got griefed by poopbob”, a nod to the infamous 2b2t griefer. ² popbob was never proven, and kira’s own announcement only says “most possibly” 2b2t trolls. ³ The chat’s accounts differ on the method. One has about fifty withers and lava over Veteran Base. ⁴ The server log prop posted shows command blocks that summoned primed TNT on every entity (villagers, horses, boats, even dropped glow ink sacs) and replaced blocks with lava. ⁵ Either way, the trading hall and the whole base were gone, along with the factory, the melon farm and kira’s gold farm. ^{6 7} They also used op to delete the recent backups. ³

kira pulled the plug quickly, which in prop’s telling spared everything but the base, ¹ and he took full responsibility. ³ The next day he made the log public and called the attackers “degenerate mc trolls not hackers” ⁸ and traced the logins to Italy (or a VPN there). ⁹

Aftermath

kira’s first hope was a Ledger rollback, though he warned it might not bring entities back. ¹⁰ The newest backup that survived was about twenty days old, and in the end that is what the friends went back to. ¹¹ See The Alternate Timeline.
