The Server on Kira's Home Connection

In the early days the “cloud” was a spare computer in kira’s house. Every outage had the same cause, as prop put it: “because kira is server host and power cut” ¹.

Power cuts. The backup battery was part of the comedy. In July 2021 kira warned that it was “out of distilled water” ², and a few days later “Our backup power not working” ³. After a cut, somebody at home (often Levi) had to switch the machine back on by hand ⁴, which annoyed players who thought it ran 24/7. The refrain was kira’s own: “Power cut here. Lmk if you have power cuts too” ⁵. He moved the server to a 24/7 line on 20 September 2021 ⁶. prop did not forgive the lag:

The address. The server ran in offline mode, and the home IP changed whenever the router rebooted, so prop re-edited his server entry to keep his VoxelMap waypoints ⁸. The .ip bot command became the way to find the current address. In June 2021 the IP refused to change for weeks, and it was declared “cursed af” ⁹. SNAKE EYES wondered if it was a good omen or a bad one ¹⁰. When it did change, as in The IP Changes and Kart's Waypoints Die, waypoints were lost. kira checked with the ISP, found a static IP cost 200 a month extra, and told everyone to “have fun with .ip and your waypoints getting reset” ¹¹.
