Who Did It? The Great Suspicion

When the The Copenheimer Grief hit on 27 October 2021, the first thing the friends wanted was a culprit. The chat that followed in the early hours of 28 October is one long episode of amateur detective work.

prop’s theory came first. There is “a huge exploit called copenheimer”, he said, which “tracks every single mc server in the world” ^{1 2}. The griefers, he reasoned, would have found the server because the friends were spawning famous names as bots, “like technoblade and jeb”, and they could watch the player list to see who was online and when ^{3 4}. He proposed digging through console logs for IPs and baiting the griefers with a decoy server full of fake bots, and IRIS insisted that professionals had done it. The background is in Famous-Name Bots and The 2b2t Griefers.

GrimWatch preferred a closer suspect. kira had posted a FitMC video about 2b2t griefing the day before, and, he pointed out, “no one other than Kira has seen the world” ⁵. When the server went unreachable (prop explained that the IP had changed and the bot had not updated ⁶), Grim added: “Timing is too good” ⁷. Kart joined in (“kira is popbob… maybe”) and declared “Detectives mode : on” ^{8 9}. Grim even tried to rope in prop. Prop took offence, said he would never mess up the server “even for joke”, and that was about the end of it ¹⁰.

BotFragx observed that the griefers had hit only prop, kira and abi, “Not even me” ¹¹. No suspect was ever convicted in chat. What the evening left behind was a cleanup, which is told in Aftermath of the 2021-10-27 Grief.
