The Axolotl servers ran in offline mode so that players on TLauncher could get in. The price was paid in skins and in admin chores.
The dance
Offline mode gave players inconsistent UUIDs, so kira explained in the first week of Season 1 that a newcomer could not simply be added: “we have to turn off whitelist, ask the player to join, add them, then turn it on”. 1 2 Grimwatch called it scuffed and asked why not just put his name in. 3 Kira’s reply was “nah man”. 4 People kept pinging prop or kira to run the ritual.
By September 2021 the instructions were: “if anybody wannts to join turn it off, add them and then turn it on”. prop pointed out the obvious weakness, that “anyone could just enter anyone’s name”. 5 6 Kira also wanted a small server, and invitations were not allowed without his approval. 7
Skins and later seasons
Only prop, kira and Grimwatch had official Mojang accounts, so only they had working skins; TLauncher skins “wont work sadly”. 8 In Season 2, whitelisting moved to !console whitelist add commands through the Discord bridge, plus a shared in-game /login password. Kira insisted on a five-step routine: make sure the name isn’t already listed, turn the whitelist off, have the person join, add them, turn it on. 9 The offline setup survived into later worlds: prop wondered in 2022 whether Mojang’s username changes would affect “offline servers like ours”. 10
It had one fun side effect. The chat suggests that the console’s offline/insecure-mode warning is how prop could spawn fake players with any username. 11
