Because The DiscordSRV Bridge (AxolotlChat) relayed every advancement into Discord, the friends could see each other’s progress in real time, and some of them turned it into a sport.
The first trophy was a custom one. On 25 September 2021 the chat logged prop, kira and Kart all completing the challenge Subspace Bubble, after they exploded portals and travelled the nether roof 1 2 3.
The real race belonged to Season 2. Emperor Sian and _eb treated the stream of advancements as a scoreboard, chasing obscure ones such as Surge Protector and How Did We Get Here 4. That second one needed the darkness effect from a warden, as Sian noted in August 2022 5, and so the race produced a real build, the Warden Cage (see also Capturing the Warden).
Sian had a philosophy about it: he cared about milestones “bc they are more permanent” 6 than winning duels. His list was full netherite, god armour, a netherite block, and eventually “first to get all advancements” 7. By 9 August 2022 he had “Just 3 more to go” 8. For the grind itself, see Advancement Chase and The Status-Effect Advancement Grind.
