The Stop-Gap Server Idea

In June 2023 prop proposed a goal-less random server to fill the wait for 1.20, and within days the plan had turned into an Earth map.

Event ASMP Earth 6 Jun 2023

ASMP Earth began as a stopgap. On 6 June 2023, prop floated a modest plan: “we make one random server” 1, with no goal and no season, to tide everyone over “till 1.20 is out” 2. The point was to wait for 1.20 and the Fabric performance mods that came with it. nYx, IRIS and GrimWatch were in on the conversation.

The idea did not stay small. By 11 June prop was already hedging, “but if the mc earth thing goes well” 3, and the plan had become an MC Earth map, possibly with the aeroplane mod “from that earthsmp from back in the day”. Six days later the work was real: on 17 June prop reported that the world file was being downloaded: “world file download pannitu irukom machi” 4.

So the server meant to fill a gap turned into a whole world. The result is told in ASMP Earth Launches.
