New Year’s Eve 2021 was interrupted by an unwelcome guest. At around 21:00 the chat relay announced that KarthikPlayzYT had joined 1, but it was not Kart. A moment later “nYxTaku was slain by KarthikPlayzYT” 2. The intruder flew around in creative mode and wished everyone a happy new year.
kira was quick. His reply was “!console stop” 3, and within about two minutes he announced “server has been taken down” 4. He did not plan to restart until he had checked for damage and set up a password system. IRIS summed it up: “we stopped a attack”, and “those idiots came in kart acc XD” 5.
The source of the problem was quickly found. kira discovered that the server was listed on mcstalker.com, a site that scans for open Minecraft servers 6, and shared the logs in voice chat to trace the attacker’s location. prop visited mcstalker’s Discord and was shocked at how openly it supported griefing, and wanted to DDoS it, but kira instead chose to make the server bulletproof.
Nothing was destroyed. kira’s announcement was brief: hit by griefers again, shut down before major damage, and the server would stay down until a login system was installed 7. It came back on New Year’s Day with a single shared password (see Login System Introduced), an update to 1.18.1 and dynamic view distance 8.
