The Dream SMP was never an Axolotl season, but it hung over several of them. In June 2021, prop posted a vote on how to end the modded season. One of the two options was to start a new season with no mods, “playing Roleplay like Dream SMP only there is no fixed lore”, where whatever players did would become the story. 1 The vote went the other way: the group stayed on its Mekanism world until 1.17 was stable. 2
Nether portals and YouTubers
The references leaked into play anyway. In July 2021, Kart built his first Nether portal using the lava-bucket “MLG” method that Dream made famous, to general mockery: prop told him to “make portal with lava nucket dream like”, and kira could only say “wtf kart made mlg portal”. 3 4 By December the chat was casually trading YouTuber references: “sub to technoblade”, Mumbo Jumbo base videos and the end of Hermitcraft season 8 (Hermitcraft Influence). 5 6
Building with the mindset
In June 2022, prop told Saitama to watch Dream SMP, and Lifesteal SMP, “preferably in Technoblade perspective”, and to build with that mindset. 7 The reference reached the base layout in August 2022, when prop planned a redstone ID-card clearance system in the style of Pandora’s Vault, so that only people with certain clearance levels could enter parts of his research base. 8
