Season 2.5 of the Axolotl SMP did not so much open as emerge from behind a locked door. On New Year’s Day 2023, kira had warned that “Axolotl’s architecture is being upgraded and it won’t be online for a while”. 1
Five weeks later he posted a single word of teaser, coming soon, with a picture. 2
Twenty-odd minutes later came the real news: to play on the server you would now have to connect to the The Axolotl VPN, and anyone wanting in should DM kira for a config and download links. 3
On 9 February 2023 the announcement went out in full. Season 2.5 of Axolotl SMP had begun, it was modded, and its main focus was to get everyone familiar with Create, since Season 3 was then expected to be built around Create Aeronautics. Players still needed to DM kira to be set up on the VPN, and the backup links were admitted to be out of date. 4
The season became the group’s first proper taste of Create on survival, and the VPN stayed part of the server’s furniture for later worlds.
