ASMP Earth had been running on 1.19.3 when, in August 2023, prop announced the move to 1.20.1. His warning was aimed at the “active” and “inactive” players alike. If there was anything they wanted to do in the old version, they should get it done first 1.
Before touching anything, prop asked kira, who hosts the machine, “have you by any chance taken and saved a recent backup of the server world ?” 2. On 2023-08-13 he also posted the “Beyond the Border” rules, which forbade claiming anything outside the map border 3.
Then came the notice: “SERVER DOWN FOR 1.20 UPDATE” 4. The upgrade took the server down at about 08:04. Afterwards prop confirmed, “1.20 works” 5, and announced that the server was finally on 1.20.1, bringing armor trims and the other new features 6. Players had to update their clients to Fabric 1.20.1.
It went more smoothly than expected. The waypoints and map data came back, to prop’s relief: “good shit i got my waypoints and map data back” 7.
