Minecraft 1.17 came out on 8 June 2021, and the Fabric modloader caught up faster than anyone expected. Three days earlier prop had wondered whether 1.17 had “thing which allows us to put a datapack that unlocks new generation” 1. It did.
On 9 June prop and nYx set a time (“today 12 o clock we are setting it up fam”) 2. The first attempt hit a server error, and kira suggested Java 16. The server was up by the next morning: “server on” 3.
prop announced “New Season Earlier than expected!” This ended Potato SMP Season 2: Mekanism (N3cro SMP becomes Potato SMP) and began Season 3, “Caves and Cliffs”, on Fabric 1.17 with Lithium 4. It was not pure vanilla. The CavesAndCliffsPreview datapack switched on the new world generation and extended world height and depth, making it “more like 1.18 snapshot” 5 6.
Players got into the spirit immediately. GrimWatch asked for a death counter, prop shared a preview build of OptiFine, and kira pitched the megabase: “ISS like structure in one of the massive caves” 7.
The season did not last. By 14 June prop was ready to “ditch server a nobody playing” 8. The real S1 would start a month later; see Axolotl SMP Season 1.
