Carpet Bots Open to Everyone

On 26 October 2021 the Season 1 chat found a small gap in its fake-player toolkit. prop and IRIS had been spawning the carpet bots Steve and Alex through the chat console, with commands like !console player Steve spawn, and ordinary players could not do the same. ¹ prop noted that kira was “gonna put one thing on the server”, and the fix was on its way. ²

kira’s first guess was that the server needed a permissions plugin. He ran !console lp creategroup member and started experimenting with a member group in LuckPerms. ³ That turned out to be the long way round. He settled it inside Carpet’s own configuration instead, and announced the result in one line:

now anybody can summon and kill bots ⁴

While he was in there, kira also switched on the mobcap and TPS loggers on the tab menu, so the lag numbers became visible to everyone. See Carpet Fake Players for what the bots were used for, and Steve for the most famous of them.
